Biscayne Bay Battles

The past few days have been amazing in the building breeze. Our warm up still has been lots of tacks and gybes, but because more and more boats are showing up, we’ve gone into practice races. There hasn’t been that much wind, so the fleet has been pretty close together, with lots of boat to boat fighting, but we were launched when we put together good races. I guess we’re still shaking some rust off because even though when we’re good, we’re great, but things can, and sometimes do go wrong. That’s why we’re training, with a coach! The wind is going to continue to build and it’s getting “cold”. The way it works in Miami is it’s usually a light sea breeze and pretty hot this time of year, except 2 days a week the temperature will go way down as a low pressure system comes whipping off the mainland, bringing us strong NNW winds, and that’s what we’ll have for tomorrow! A hazard on the bay here is all of the seaweed. Sometimes it even dictates our strategy. Yesterday, I could see what I thought was seaweed hanging off the stern, but when I reached down to grab it, I jumped because it was a large sucker fish stuck on the hull!! It really wouldn’t let go, not even when Mark came over in the noisy coach boat. Dan went back there and literally pulled it off of the boat, and it was about a foot long! Crazy. Hopefully one of these things won’t be catching a ride during a race, or we’ll be cooking it for dinner.
